GM

Good morning: the quick hello you see all over crypto and Web3 chats, whatever the time zone.

A gm post is usually just a friendly way to show up and acknowledge the people around you. It might start a discussion, sit under a project update or get a dozen gm replies back. In a global community, it doesn't have to be morning for everyone reading it.

IN THE WILD
gm frens. Anyone know where the notes from yesterday's community call ended up?

Beginner

GN

Good night: a casual sign-off when someone leaves a crypto chat or calls it a day.

GN is the evening counterpart to GM. People drop it into a group chat or social post when they're heading off, often with a friendly reply from others. Crypto markets keep running, but the person saying gn is done for now; it isn't a statement about what the price will do overnight.

IN THE WILD
gn everyone. Closing the charts and getting some sleep.

Diamond hands

Holding through big price swings and pressure to sell, described in crypto chat as having an unshakable grip.

Someone claiming diamond hands is saying they aren't letting go just because the chart looks rough. The phrase can be praise for conviction or a self-aware joke about stubbornness. It overlaps with HODL, but puts the emphasis on resisting pressure. Keeping a position doesn't, by itself, make that position sound.

IN THE WILD
The chat called it diamond hands. I called it not checking my wallet for a week.

Paper hands

A teasing or critical label for someone who sells quickly when the market gets shaky.

Paper hands is the opposite of diamond hands: the joke is that your grip folds under pressure. People use it about panic selling, an early exit or themselves after a nervous trade. It is a community judgment, not a proper description of someone's plan; selling can also be a deliberate choice.

IN THE WILD
They called me paper hands after I sold during the dip, but that was the exit I'd planned.

Ape in

Jumping into a token or NFT quickly, usually before doing much research.

To ape in is to rush the buy instead of taking time to understand the project. It often appears around fresh launches, hype and FOMO, and people use it with a mix of excitement and self-mockery. Aped and apeing describe the same behavior; none of the wording makes the project less risky.

IN THE WILD
I aped in after one meme, then finally opened the docs and noticed the transfer restrictions.

Bagholder

Someone still holding a coin or token after its value has dropped badly, often hoping it will recover.

In crypto chat, a bag is a holding, and a bagholder is the person left carrying it after the excitement fades. The label often implies buying the hype and missing an exit, but it can also be self-deprecating. It isn't a separate account type or a precise measure of losses.

IN THE WILD
Bought the hype, missed the exit, now I'm the bagholder still asking for project updates.

To the moon

A crypto cheer for a huge price rise, or the hope that one is coming.

People post to the moon when they're excited about a coin, and say it is mooning when the price shoots up. Rocket emojis tend to follow. The expression is loose and often exaggerated: there is no particular percentage or price target behind it unless the person gives one.

IN THE WILD
The chart went vertical and the replies were all to the moon, with roughly a thousand rockets.

Shill

To push a coin or project hard, usually because you want other people to buy or pay attention.

A shill might hype a token they hold, promote a paid partnership or keep dropping the same project into unrelated conversations. In crypto, the word often suggests a personal incentive behind the enthusiasm. People also use it loosely, so calling someone a shill doesn't prove a hidden deal exists.

IN THE WILD
Is this an actual review, or are you shilling a token you already hold?

Alpha

Information someone thinks gives them an early edge in crypto: a lead, insight or tip others haven't spotted.

A chat promising alpha is usually offering supposedly useful information about a project, launch or market. It may be a thoughtful observation, a rumor or a recycled screenshot dressed up as a secret. This slang use is different from the formal finance measure called alpha, and the label doesn't establish that the information is accurate.

IN THE WILD
The group called it alpha, but the only source was a screenshot with no link.
