State pruning
Removing unneeded historical state data from a node's local storage while preserving the state it needs to operate.
PLAIN-ENGLISH DEFINITION
In more detail
Pruning can reduce disk usage, but a node may then be unable to answer some historical state queries directly. The details depend on the client and storage mode; removing old state does not authorize accepting invalid new transactions.
IN THE WILD
How you might use it
A pruned Ethereum node validates new blocks but cannot directly return every old contract storage value.
