Merkle proof
Intermediate hashes used to check that an item belongs to a Merkle-root commitment.
PLAIN-ENGLISH DEFINITION
In more detail
Starting from the item, a verifier combines supplied hashes to reconstruct the expected root. A match establishes inclusion relative to that root. The verifier still needs a reason to accept the root itself; inclusion does not establish that an item's real-world claims are true.
