Pedersen commitment

A cryptographic commitment that hides a value using a blinding factor while binding the committer to that value.

PLAIN-ENGLISH DEFINITION

In more detail

Its algebra lets commitments be combined to check relationships without revealing every underlying amount. Systems still need additional proofs for properties such as valid value ranges; a commitment alone does not establish them.

IN THE WILD

How you might use it

A confidential transaction commits to amounts and proves that the committed inputs and outputs balance.
